I guess it is obvious to you all that my fiber filled trip to South America was a life changing experience. It opened my eyes to all kinds of possibilities in terms of fibers and dyes. We saw baby alpaca being carded with organic cotton, silk blended with llama, and even the coveted Vicuna yarn--something I had never touched before.
At one mill, we bought a huge amount of cotton and silk mill ends for our upcoming January Sale, which will once again be hosted by DBNY--Discontinued Brand Name Yarn. At another, we bought beautiful Peruvian wool from the Highlands and are having it spun into dk and sport weight yarn, also for the sale.
We stopped at several hand dyeing co-ops to watch the different hand dye, dip dye and handpainting processes. Small dye houses are springing up all over South America to help local women earn a fair trade. We spent two days there developing colorways for for a new kind of self striping handpaint Supersock I would like to sell in 2010. These women spoke no English, but that was not a problem, because color became our language.
After weeks of trials, we have settled on one group of women who will paint 10 of my new colorways. Each hank is shown with a swatch from the leg of a sock, to show you how it will stripe when knitting socks. We are going to call these specially striped handpaints "Fingerpaints" to distinguish them from the rest of our line. They are shown below, handpainted on Supersock Select. Each hank will have the regular Supersock put up of 4 oz/ 420 yards and retail for $22. We hope to have the first run ready for your needles soon. Our January Sale promises to be bigger than ever. We will have a preview for you soon and don't worry, there will be the usual 200 Goodie Bags and one of them will contain the coveted "Get Out of Sale" Free card.
These are our new self striping colors. Click for an enlargement.

Just gorgeous!

What an exciting trip for any knitter!! Those yarns are beautiful and will no doubt make a very lovely project for someone.
I was particularly interested in your note about Vicuna yarn - it's definitely a hard fiber to come by and have a pretty long turn around time as far as processing goes. I finally found some at a great price at Paradise Fibers, not sure if you or your readers are interested but just thought I'd share that too!
