I must say I love Possum Sock yarn. Love it, love it, love it! Possum is so soft and lofty when mixed with Superwash Merino. Fun to dye because it takes the color so evenly and I adore the double halo effect the guard hairs give. When you first start to work with Possum, it looks like any other sock yarn. Then it begins to bloom and develop a little halo and offers depth. This yarn is so lightweight but looks warm and furry -- what an optical illusion! Can you tell I am in love with this fiber?
In truth, Possum yarn is warm. I still have a pair of Possum Socks I made 7 years ago, about the last time we had Possum Sock yarn and they are very, very warm especially on winter nights in my drafty old
farmhouse. I still wear the socks on special occasions because now they are antique socks and have been over worn by me -- used as slippers, bed socks, barn boot socks and horseback riding socks. I
admit I could have taken better care of them. But I loved them so much. Now they are ratty tatty socks but still enjoy a prime spot in my hand knit sock drawer when I see them every morning although I no long wear them.
Right now I am in Possum Sock heaven. I had 4500 hanks of it and only 900 hanks have left our warehouse so far. The rest is still mine, still undyed and in truth I will hate to see it go, because it took so long to get this rare, rare yarn. I find myself dying other less attractive yarns instead of Possum Sock and putting off the larger orders (sorry Inua Wool, sorry The Loopy Ewe) because when it is gone, it will be truly gone. Forever. The end of an era. We have sold every last hank of this yarn to stores and I hope some of you have a chance to get some in the coming weeks. Maybe I'll even save a hank or two for myself!
If you have to have this yarn, here are the big players: Yarn Market in their Impressionist Line, Simply Socks in semi solids and CTH colorways, The Loopy Ewe in special Indie Dyer colors and Jimmy Beans Wool in custom colorways. At Stitches Midwest it is possible that the Indie Dyer booth will have some dyed in her own colorways. Or maybe it won't last that long. Happy Hunting!
This yarn sounds and looks lovely. I hope to be able to get my hands on some when it hits the shops.
