Dear Bloggies:
I'm pretty excited about my new Flirty Skirt which is the first wearable art piece I've painted in years. I showed it for the first time at the fashion show at TNNA and it got lots of comments--mostly along the lines of "How did you do that?" Cat Borhdi, celebrated sock designer and author, thought I should teach a class on the painting technique and apparently the folks at Knitters Magazine think so too, because they have hired me to teach a Wearable art Class at Stitches.
I have not taught a Stitches class in over 10 years and I am excited to be back doing workshops. The skirt is a great example of Fiber Art and to tell you the truth, I think there is a little bit of the fiber artist in any knitter who works with handpainted yarn on a regular basis. So I have agreed to teach my skirt technique on a smaller item for a class, Rick from XRX suggested a handpainted beret and I do believe a piece this size can be accomplished in 6 hours of class.
The skirt took me two days just to paint after it was knit and then there was quite a bit of finishing. Knitter's Magazine has just finished photographing it for their brochure. Now I will be showing it at Stitches Events including the Fashion Shows and offering demos for those of you who would like to try a large wearable art garment.
After mass producing yarn and patterns for the wholesale market and writing commercial knitting books for so long, it is nice to get back to my roots as a fiber artist once more. I hope some of you will join me for a workshop.
